DIY Wellness Shots
It’s no secret around here that I’m a fan of sneaking in micronutrients wherever I can.
Although I don’t believe they’re the end-all-be-all to good health as some may claim (that’s more about your lifestyle and nutrition choices as a whole), I love a good green juice.
And you guys know I love sneaking ALL kinds of healthy goodies into my GPF smoothies.
Whenever I find myself at a juice bar or cafe that offers wellness shots, I am alllwaaays tempted to purchase them. Why not give my immune system a little boost, ya know?
The other day, I felt a little scratch in my throat, which prompted me to head to the grocery store to look for some sort of drink that included immune-boosting, vitamin C-rich ingredients.
I found what I was looking for — individual shots of OJ, ginger, lemon & honey.
But here’s the kicker… it was $6 PER SHOT.
I’m sorry, what?!
I got to thinking, “I can definitely make these at home on my own. AND I can boost the nutritional profile even more.”
I often buy fresh ginger and turmeric for my morning GPF smoothies, so why not just buy a few more ingredients so I could make these IN BULK for probably $6 total?!
I made a huge batch of these super easily at home, so if you need some citrusy, anti-inflammatory, immune-boosting goodness this season, I got you!
DIY Wellness Shots
Ingredients:
1 cup of orange juice (no sugar added)
juice of one whole lemon
1 large knob of ginger, peeled
1 small/medium size knob of turmeric, peeled (SO many health benefits of turmeric — see here)
a few cracks of black pepper (to increase bioavailability of the turmeric) *source
1/2 tsp. of avocado or olive oil (turmeric is fat-soluble, so it binds to fat and is more easily absorbed by our gut) *source
Optional: a few dashes of cayenne pepper (I omitted this because I forgot it at the grocery store, but you can add for a little antioxidant boost)
To be honest, I just kind of winged it with the ingredients, but tried to guesstimate as best as I could. Please feel free to adjust any of the ingredients to suit your own taste/needs. Be aware, these DIY wellness shots are SPICY, but that’s what makes them feel so good on your throat!
Directions:
Peel and chop ginger & turmeric
Juice the lemon
Add all ingredients to high-speed blender and blend
TAKE A SHOT!
Storing:
Serve these DIY wellness shots immediately after making for maximum freshness (get a buddy to join you!)
You can also refrigerate for up to 24 hours, and/or freeze the leftovers.
